How Life’s Curveballs Helped Me Build an Unstoppable Law Firm Brand

I’ve always believed that when life throws you a curveball, you have two options: let it derail you or use it to evolve. And over the last two decades—through building businesses, experiencing heartbreak, writing books, and leading a law firm—I’ve learned how to choose the second option every time.

Yes, sometimes that choice is messy. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable. But it always leads to growth.

Today, I want to talk about something deeply personal: how setbacks, both big and small, helped me build an unstoppable law firm brand. Because building a law firm brand isn’t just about logos, taglines, or pretty websites. It’s about resilience. It’s about consistency. And it’s about showing up even when life doesn’t go to plan.

This is my story.

Just a few days ago, I sat down and recorded a full podcast episode. I felt great about it. I uploaded it for editing, then, in an overly tidy moment, I deleted the original file from my desktop—and then emptied the trash.

Gone.

When my editor reached out to say the file was never received, my heart sank. I had tried to recover it using software, scoured YouTube for tips, and even managed to retrieve another interview I had deleted that day—but not the episode I had just recorded.

The irony? That episode was all about how to bounce back from setbacks. The universe clearly has a sense of humor.

Instead of spiraling, I laughed, regrouped, and hit record again. Because that’s what building a resilient law firm brand is about: showing up consistently, even when things go sideways.

Curveballs and Divorce: My Biggest Reset

One of the most crucial curveballs in my life came when, out of nowhere, I found myself going through a divorce. It hit hard—especially since I’m a divorce lawyer. I help others navigate this all the time, but when it happened to me, it stopped me in my tracks.

At the time, I was running my law practice, writing a book, building an online business, and raising my kids. Everything felt like it was spiraling. I went into survival mode and watched the creative part of myself fizzle out. I stopped doing what lit me up—writing, creating, dreaming.

But here’s the thing: my law firm became my anchor. It was the one area where I knew I could still lead, grow, and build something meaningful. I doubled down and focused on scaling—not out of desperation but out of necessity and purpose.

That decision changed my life.

From One-Woman Show to Scalable Brand

Back then, my firm was just me. I was handling clients, court dates, admin—you name it. But I knew that if I wanted to reclaim my time and future, I had to shift from being in the business to working on the business.

So, I got serious about law firm branding. I refined our niche (family and divorce law), revamped our messaging, and focused on building a team aligned with my values.

Today, that one-woman firm has grown into a thriving team of 14. I’ve built systems, delegated with confidence, and created a business that doesn’t depend on me being in the office every single day.

That kind of freedom? It’s not just luck. It’s built on strategy, structure, and a personal brand that’s rock-solid.

How Curveballs Shape Your Law Firm Brand

When you're building a law firm brand, your story is your superpower. Clients want to work with real people—leaders who understand pain, challenge, and resilience.

Setbacks aren’t just distractions. They’re opportunities to refine who you are and how you lead.

Here’s what I’ve learned through every curveball:

  1. Expect Change—and Be Willing to Adapt

Change is inevitable. If you build your business (or life) around the idea that everything will always go smoothly, curveballs will crush you.

When you’re building a law firm brand, you have to be adaptable. Whether it's evolving tech, shifting client expectations, or changes in your personal life—flexibility is your friend.

  1. The Hardest Moments Spark the Greatest Growth

The divorce? It gutted me. But it also forced me to reimagine my life. I learned to rely on myself in a whole new way. I built strength I didn’t know I had. I made bold decisions and said “yes” to myself.

Those seasons of struggle helped shape the leader and entrepreneur I am today—and they deepened the values behind my law firm brand: strength, resilience, and compassionate leadership.

  1. Reframe Setbacks as Opportunities

Sometimes, it’s something small—like losing a file. Other time,s it’s losing a client, a staff member, or a relationship.

No matter the scale, every curveball is a chance to pause, reassess, and pivot.

When a longtime team member recently left our firm, it hurt. But it also created space for a new hire—someone who brought fresh energy and new ideas to the business. What first felt like a loss became a gain.

  1. Infuse Your Brand with Your Humanity

People don’t connect with perfection—they connect with authenticity. Every time I’ve shared something personal in my business (like my divorce, travel fears, or podcast flubs), the response has been overwhelming.

Your law firm brand should reflect you. The real, raw, resilient you. Don’t be afraid to show up as a human first.

  1. Keep an Open Mind—The “Worst Thing” Might Be the Best Thing

So many of the things I once thought were disasters turned out to be gifts. Whether it was a failed partnership, a client who walked away, or a change I didn’t ask for—those moments all pushed me toward something better.

If you’re facing a curveball right now, ask yourself: What else could this mean? There might be something beautiful waiting on the other side.

  1. Lead with Kindness and Humor

This one’s simple but powerful. When things go wrong (and they will), be kind to yourself and others. And if you can find the humor in the moment, even better.

I’ve learned that grace, empathy, and laughter go a long way—especially in business.

  1. Treat Yourself Well During the Storm

After my divorce, I booked a trip to Paris with my daughter. Just the two of us. I’d never traveled overseas alone, let alone as a single mum with a five-year-old. I was terrified.

But that trip changed me. It reminded me that I was capable, adventurous, and strong. It filled my soul and reminded me who I was outside of business and family, and pressure.

Sometimes the best thing you can do after a setback is to pause and pour into yourself.

  1. Don’t Stop Moving Forward

Above all else—keep going.

Don’t let curveballs convince you to stop showing up. Don’t let fear keep you stuck. Don’t let someone else’s actions derail your dream.

Whether it’s starting a new offer, hiring again, or hitting record on a second podcast—just take the next step.

Because you are the foundation of your law firm brand. And when you show up strong and steady, even when life shakes, your brand becomes unshakable too.

Your Brand Is Built in the Bounce Back

So here’s my final truth: Setbacks will come. You’ll lose files. You’ll lose people. You’ll lose parts of your old self. But in the rebuilding, you’ll uncover your true power.

And that is how you build a law firm brand that lasts.
